Billings & Sons Plumbing — Russ Billings

Russ Billings doesn't advertise. He's never needed to. In twenty-seven years of running Billings & Sons Plumbing out of East Helena, his business has grown almost entirely by word of mouth — by the quiet recommendation of someone whose water heater Russ replaced on a February weekend, or the neighbor who got a leak fixed at midnight and a fair bill in the morning.

He started the company in 1998 with a used pickup truck and his father's tools. His father, Earl, had spent thirty years as a journeyman plumber for a commercial outfit in Great Falls before retiring to Helena. "He taught me the trade, and he taught me that the trade was the point," Russ says. "You do good work. You show up when you say you will. Everything else follows."

The Family Part of the Business

The "Sons" in Billings & Sons is, for now, one son: Travis, who turned twenty-four last fall and earned his journeyman's license the spring before that. Russ talks about Travis the way men in trades talk about the people they've trained well — with a kind of reserved pride that doesn't quite fit into a single sentence.

"He came up doing it right. I didn't let him take shortcuts." Travis now runs service calls independently, handles scheduling when his dad is on a job, and has already developed a reputation of his own. Russ thinks that's the whole point.

"I didn't just build a plumbing company. I built something I can put in his hands."

The company stays small on purpose. Russ has been approached about taking on commercial contracts and expanding the crew. He's declined every time. Four people — Russ, Travis, and two apprentices — is enough to do the work he wants to do. "Big means managing," he says. "I got into this to fix pipes."

What He's Actually Good At

Russ specializes in residential work: repairs, replacements, water heater installs, drain cleaning. He does emergency calls. He answers his phone. That last part, he says, is rarer than it should be.

He works East Helena primarily but covers the whole valley. He's been inside most of the older houses in his part of town at least once. "You get to know a neighborhood when you've been under half its foundations," he says.

When we asked what he hopes people say about him, he didn't talk about craft or expertise. "That when something went wrong, I came and fixed it and didn't make their day worse than it already was."

That's a low bar on paper. In practice, it's harder than it sounds — and Russ Billings has been clearing it for three decades.
